Understanding what’s happening is often the beginning of changing what happens next.
Our Transformational Retreats are designed for the times when something has begun to take up too much space in your life — anxiety, overwhelm, long-term health problems, people-pleasing, a period of change, or the feeling that the way you are currently living simply isn’t working anymore.
These aren't therapy sessions, and they aren't traditional wellbeing retreats where the focus is simply on taking a day away. They sit somewhere in between.
Each retreat brings together evidence-informed psychology and health education, practical exercises and strategies, guided reflection and restorative practices to help you understand what may be happening, recognise the patterns that can keep it going, and begin exploring what you can realistically do differently.
There is still plenty of space to pause, eat good food, step outside, talk, think and rest. We believe people learn and reflect better when they aren't being rushed from one thing to the next.
You won't leave with a promise that everything will suddenly be fixed.
You will leave with a better understanding of where you are, practical tools you can begin using straight away, and a clearer idea of what your next steps might look like.
Different problems need different conversations.
Rather than trying to create one retreat that covers everything, each of our Transformational Retreats focuses on a particular challenge or stage of life.
The subject changes, but our approach remains the same: understand first, then begin to change.
Anxiety & Overthinking • Overwhelm & Overload • Living With Pain, Fatigue & Persistent Symptoms • Self-Worth, Boundaries & People-Pleasing • More Than Menopause • Sustainable Health Change

When your mind won't switch off.
Anxiety is part of the system designed to anticipate problems, recognise threats and keep us safe. But sometimes that system becomes a little too good at its job.
You might find yourself constantly thinking ahead, replaying conversations, imagining everything that could go wrong or trying to prepare for every possible outcome. Perhaps you avoid things that make you anxious, look for reassurance that everything will be okay, or find that as soon as one worry disappears, another takes its place.
This retreat explores what is actually happening when we experience anxiety and why some of the things we instinctively do to feel safer can unintentionally keep the cycle going.
We'll explore worry and overthinking, catastrophic thinking, avoidance and reassurance seeking, the relationship between thoughts, physical sensations and behaviour, and practical ways to respond differently.
Alongside the learning, there will be guided exercises, restorative practices, good food, breaks and plenty of space to absorb what you're discovering.
The aim isn't to eliminate anxiety from your life. It's to understand it better, feel less frightened by what your mind and body are doing, and leave with practical strategies for responding when anxiety shows up.

Sometimes there isn't one enormous problem, there are twenty smaller ones.
Work. Family. Messages. Decisions. Responsibilities. Other people's needs. The things you haven't finished. The things you've forgotten. The things you're already worrying you'll forget.
Eventually, even something relatively small can feel like one demand too many.
This retreat explores what happens when the demands being placed upon us repeatedly exceed the physical, emotional and mental resources we have available to meet them.
We'll look at chronic stress, overload and burnout; why overwhelmed brains struggle with seemingly simple tasks; the cycles that can keep us pushing long after our capacity has been exceeded; and the role identity can play when we've become "the capable one", "the fixer", "the doer" or the person everybody relies upon.
We'll explore how to recognise your own patterns, understand the relationship between pressure and capacity, reduce unnecessary load and make realistic changes before reaching the point where your body or brain forces you to stop.
This isn't about reorganising your to-do list so you can squeeze even more in.
It's about understanding what's taking so much out of you — and finding the places where change is actually possible.

When pain and fatigue change the shape of everyday life, living with persistent or fluctuating symptoms can affect almost every part of life.
Pain, fatigue, brain fog and limited or unpredictable energy can change how you work, socialise, exercise, make plans and spend your time. Even ordinary decisions can become calculations: How much energy do I have? What will this cost me? If I do this today, how will I feel tomorrow?
This retreat has been created particularly for people living with conditions such as fibromyalgia, ME/CFS and Long Covid, as well as those experiencing similar patterns of persistent pain, fatigue and fluctuating symptoms.
We'll explore the relationship between symptoms, stress and the nervous system; energy and activity patterns; boom-and-bust cycles; rest and recovery; thoughts and emotions; identity and the challenge of adapting to a body that doesn't always behave predictably.
This isn't about telling you that your symptoms are "all in your head", pushing through them or promising a cure.
It's about understanding some of the factors that can influence how we experience and live alongside persistent symptoms, finding practical ways to work with the capacity you have, and exploring how to build a meaningful life without making managing your health another exhausting full-time job.

People-pleasing isn't simply about being "too nice". Our patterns around approval, responsibility, conflict and boundaries can develop for very understandable reasons — and become so automatic that saying no feels far more uncomfortable than saying yes.
This retreat explores what can happen when our sense of worth becomes tangled up with being useful, agreeable, capable or needed.
We'll look at boundaries, guilt, responsibility and resentment; the difference between disappointing someone and doing something wrong; and the beliefs and identities that can sit underneath people-pleasing.
Through practical exercises, reflection and discussion, you'll begin identifying your own patterns and exploring different ways of responding.
The aim isn't to care less about other people.
It's to discover what caring for them can look like when you are included in the equation too.

Perimenopause and menopause can bring very real physical and emotional changes. But they're often happening at the same time as something much bigger.
Children may need us differently. Parents get older. Relationships evolve. Careers shift. Bodies change. Priorities move. Time suddenly feels a little more visible.
And somewhere amongst all of that, you may find yourself wondering who you are now — and what you actually want from the next part of your life.
More Than Menopause explores the wider experience of midlife, including the physical and psychological effects of hormonal change, but also identity, relationships, changing roles, health, confidence, expectations and what happens when the life you've spent years building starts to feel different.
There is no expectation that you arrive desperate to reinvent yourself.
For some women, this stage brings major change. For others, it's a quieter recalibration: recognising that the person you are now may need something different from the person you were ten or twenty years ago.
This retreat gives you something we don't always give ourselves enough of — time and space to consider what comes next.

Most of us already know quite a lot about being healthy.
Move more. Sleep enough. Eat well. Rest. Manage stress. Drink water. Build good habits.
Knowing it and consistently doing it are two very different things.
This retreat explores the psychology of behaviour change and why good intentions so often disappear when they collide with tiredness, stress, busy lives, old habits and the inevitable day when motivation doesn't turn up.
We'll look at how habits form, what influences motivation, why relying on willpower is rarely an effective long-term strategy and how all-or-nothing thinking can turn one difficult day into abandoning something completely.
We'll also explore goals, environment, identity, reward and setbacks, and how to make a desired behaviour easier to begin and easier to repeat.
This isn't a diet, fitness or weight-loss retreat, and nobody will be handing you a list of things you "should" be doing.
Instead, you'll choose the areas of your own health and wellbeing that matter to you and use what we're learning to explore changes that could realistically fit into your life.
Because sustainable change isn't about creating the perfect routine for your best week.
It's about creating something that still has a chance of working during a perfectly ordinary one.

Our Transformational Retreats combine evidence-informed learning with practical exercises, reflection and restorative experiences.
Across the day, we'll move between short teaching sessions, individual exercises and guided discussion, with plenty of breaks and time to absorb what we're exploring.
There is no expectation to share personal experiences with the group. You can contribute to discussions as much or as little as you choose, and everything we offer is an invitation rather than an obligation.
These aren't seven-hour workshops. Lunch, refreshments, restorative practices and time to step outside or simply pause are all part of the day too.
We want you to leave feeling that you've had space to think and breathe — as well as with a better understanding of what you're experiencing and practical ideas you can take back into everyday life.
Our Transformational Retreats are created and hosted by Kate Robbins and Gemma Sizer, bringing together complementary approaches to understanding wellbeing and creating meaningful change.
Kate is an author, health coach and wellbeing educator with a particular interest in psychology, behaviour, stress and sustainable change. Her work focuses on making complex ideas understandable and useful — helping people recognise what may be driving their experiences and, importantly, where they have opportunities to respond differently.
Gemma is a Holistic Wellbeing Specialist whose work draws on movement, breath, mindfulness, relaxation and therapeutic approaches. She brings the body into the conversation, helping guests explore practical ways to regulate, restore and reconnect alongside the learning and reflection.
Together, we combine evidence-informed education with practical experience, restorative practices and space to think — because understanding something is important, but lasting change comes from finding ways to apply that understanding in real life.
Please reach us at info@thebarnretreats.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.
You don't need to be at crisis point to come to a Transformational Retreat.
They're designed for people who recognise that something is affecting their life and would like the time, information and support to understand it better and explore what might help.
Our retreats are educational and supportive rather than therapy or medical treatment, and you will never be expected to disclose personal information to the group.
If you have a physical, sensory or cognitive need, health condition or anything else that may affect your participation, please get in touch before attending. We're always happy to talk through the day and discuss any adjustments that might help.
Absolutely — lots of our guests do.
We keep our groups small and the days are fully hosted, so you won't be left wondering where to go or what you're supposed to be doing. There's also no pressure to socialise if you'd prefer some quieter time.
No. Everything we offer is an invitation, not an obligation.
You're welcome to sit something out, adapt an activity, take a break, head outside or simply have some quiet time whenever you need it.
Comfortable clothes that you can relax and move around in are perfect.
Some activities may take place outside when the weather allows, so we'd recommend bringing suitable shoes and an extra layer. We'll let you know before your retreat if there's anything specific you'll need.
Very little.
We provide everything needed for the activities, along with lunch and refreshments throughout the day. Bring a water bottle if you'd like one and anything personal that will help you feel comfortable.
Yes, refreshments are included in your retreat.
If you have allergies, intolerances or other dietary requirements, please let us know when you book so we can plan for you.
We’re based in the Warwickshire countryside, around 25 minutes from Stratford-upon-Avon and Banbury, and just over an hour from Oxford, Cheltenham and Birmingham.
We want our retreats to be as accessible and inclusive as possible.
If you have a physical, sensory or cognitive need, health condition, injury or anything else that might affect your participation, please contact us before attending. We can talk through the day with you and discuss any adjustments that may help.
There is no expectation to participate in every activity and we will always do our best to accommodate individual needs wherever we can.
We deliberately keep our Transformational Retreats small, with a maximum of 10 guests.
This gives us enough people to create a shared experience while keeping the atmosphere relaxed and personal.
Transformative Retreat bookings are non-refundable.
If you give us at least 48 hours' notice, we can transfer your booking to another available date or issue a voucher for the value of your booking.
Please see our Cancellation & Refund Policy for full details.
